In 1995, nearly 8,000 Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) have been targeted and killed in what is now known as the SREBRENICA GENOCIDE. This mass murder has been referred to as the worst heinous crime to have been committed since the WWII. Today, thousands gather in Bosnia to commemorate the 18th anniversary of this genocide. 409 newly-discovered bodies of victims will receive a proper burial, years after the massacre.
Again and again, I’ve wondered, how can such genocides even happen. Don’t we ever learn? What was the rest of the world doing then when thousands of people were being murdered?
We may come from different ethnicities, speak different tongues, and have various creeds but ultimately, all people are of ONE ESSENCE. We are of one humanity.
As the Persian poet Saadi once conveyed:
“Human beings are members of a whole, in creation of one essence and soul. If one member is afflicted with pain, other members uneasy will remain. If you’ve no sympathy for human pain, the name of human you cannot retain!”
LET THIS NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.
